Turtle and Tortoise Show Today

Dog and cat shows are popular among breeders and pet owners alike.? Now turtle and tortoise owners, breeders, and other kinds of terrapin enthusiasts can revel in their own tortuga glory at the 37th annual Turtle and Tortoise Show in New York today.

From 11am to 5pm members of New York Turtle and Tortoise Society and their guests can show off their collection of turtles and tortoises to win ribbons based on many of the same characteristics used to judge dogs and cats.

Many rules and regulations apply (so check out their website), but if you can over to the show, it should be a good time!

UVB Lighting for ALL Reptiles?

UVB lighting mimics the sun's rays for indoor enclosures.? It provides essential things that enable creatures to grow and metabolize many vitamins and minerals.? Reptiles are one kind of pet that need these invisible rays, but do ALL reptiles need it?

Nocturnal reptiles and snakes typically don't "need" UVB rays to grow and thrive.? They naturally don't soak up as many rays in the wild as your daytime reptiles, therefore they seem to do just fine in captivity without the aid of a UVB bulb.

With this being said, it can still be beneficial for your nocturnal reptile or snake to get these rays, especially if they aren't feeling too well.? It also definitely doesn't hurt to provide UVB lighting to your reptile on a daily basis.? As long as the light isn't too close to your pet, there is no harm done.

Other Names for a Rabbit

The house rabbit is found all over the world as a pet in indoor cages and outside in hutches.

Rabbits are known by many names throughout the world, regardless of where they live.? They can be called lagomorphs for the scientific order in which they are of, bunnies, hares (which are actually different than rabbits), or a coney (an old English term for a rabbit).

What do you call a rabbit where you live?

Awesome Exotic Pet Dads

Your dad may or may not have had a hand in raising you, but?these dads definitely do!

After the female poison dart frog lays her eggs, the males return to the eggs periodically to check up on them.? Once the tadpoles hatch they don't swim onto mommy - daddy carries them on his back to a safer place so they can finish growing into little froggies.

Marmoset dads care for their babies right from birth.? They clean them, carry them around, and only bring them to their mother so they can feed.? Once the baby is eating solid food dad feeds them!

Wolf dads are protective of their young as many human fathers are.? The dad guards their den with the mom and pups inside, bringing them food until the pups are bigger.? The family then stays together as a pack.

Go dads!

Black Mamba Kills Owner

Black Mamba

Black mambas are some of the deadliest snakes in the world, but that doesn't stop people from keeping them as pets in their homes.

A? 56-year old woman in New York was found dead in her bedroom with bites from a snake up and down her arm.? The padlock on her pet black mamba was undone and it is suspected that the poisonous snake killed her.

There are also dozens of other snakes in the house, over 50 of which are poisonous, but the mamba is said to be the culprit.? The investigation is still in progress as far as I know, but there are some unanswered questions authorities have about the situation.? She didn't call 911 and she was an unhappy individual.? Friends say it is possible she may have taken her own life.

My condolences to the family and friends.

Python Found Outside Restaurant

I'm hoping KFC isn't starting a new menu that involves Burmese Pythons since a 6-footer was found by the dumpster of one of the restaurants in Ohio.

While doing emptying the dumpster of the fast food restaurant, the garbage man found this lethargic snake on the garbage he had just put in his truck.

Thankfully the snake was rescued and is being cared for by the local SPCA.? Unfortunately someone must have tried to throw their "pet that got too large for their liking" away, or it escaped it's enclosure.

Macaque Taken From Leukemia Patient

A 23-year old woman had a pet macaque that was recently taken away from her by authorities.? Primates are not allowed in the state of Pennsylvania where the woman lives without first acquiring a permit.

The woman states she has leukemia, a type of cancer, and only has 6 months to live.? She says the macaque was her therapy monkey and that she is miserable without it.? The family is going to appeal the judge's decision to call the primate illegal.

Do you think there should be separate laws for therapy animals versus pets?

Kitty Holster Wows Parents

The harness known to many Serval owners has recently been awarded the Parent Tested Parent Approved Winner's Seal of Approval.

What this means is an unbiased group of parents tested this unique kitty holster and declared it to be pretty awesome.? Now I don't know what kind of cats were used while testing this harness but hopefully at least a few Serval owners were representing the exotic cat pet owner population.? Good news for Serval (and regular house cat) owners everywhere!

How do YOU like the Kitty Holster?

Spotlight on the Chausie

What in the world is a Chausie, you ask?Chausie Cat

One of the more popular exotic hybrid cats, the Chausie was created by crossing two different kinds of cats.? The Jungle Cat and domestic cats were used to get this wild looking cat.

The unique fur has stripes of different colors on each strand of hair, creating what is called a "grizzled" look.? The grizzly bear has similar looking hair and got his name that way!

Turtle Names

I have two Red-Eared Sliders and a Mississippi Map Turtle.? One of the sliders and the map were rescued from the animal clinic I work at since the previous owners could not care for them any longer (a common problem with water turtles when the owners realize how large of an enclosure they require).

My original slider is named Antoinette (Toni for short), the rescued slider is named Stumpy since she only has three legs (one was almost entirely amputated due to a severe infection when she was tiny), and the map is named Clover (after a cat with the same name since they had similar personalities).

How did you name your turtles?

Help With Exotic Pets

Owners of exotic pets get their animals for a number of reasons.? Some are planned and thought out, researched and prepared for as they should be, while others are spontaneous purchases that leave the new owner asking whoever they can "What do I do now?"? Regardless of how they may have gotten there, some owners realize after time that they are just in over their heads.

Pet care can be a full-time job for certain animals.? No matter how good the intentions, sometimes things don't happen they way they should.? Do you know someone like this?? Perhaps you are someone like this?? You may need help creating an appropriate and safe enclosure or in getting medical attention to your pet.? Do you feel like there is no one who understands?? Are you embarrassed or ashamed?

There are people who want to help, but you must be willing to accept the help.? If this sounds like you and you are looking for support, try posting in the forum, explore the wild animal sanctuaries in your area, contact organizations like Outreach for Animals, or if you are in Ohio, send me an e-mail and I may be able to help.
